Professional Semester 1
Teacher Mentor : Patti Caven Grade : 2 Subject Taught : Generalist I completed my PSI practicum at Senator Buchanan Elementary School in Lethbridge, AB. I taught in a 25 student grade 2 classroom. There was a wide range of needs and individualization within the classroom. I spent a large portion of my time teaching science, small guided reading groups aimed at specific skills, and math. My biggest goal going into this practicum was applying classroom management techniques in the classroom. During this practicum, I was able to make significant gains in leading and maintaining attention within the classroom. I was also able to practice using a variety of differentiated instruction techniques to suit the many needs of students in the classroom. |
Letter of Reference and PS1 EvaluationBelow you can find a letter of reference from my PS1 teacher mentor and a copy of my summative assessment
Science - Hot and Cold (KSA #1,5,9)As part of the grade 2 science curriculum, students analyzed and learned to recognize the effects of heating and cooling objects and themselves. During my practicum, I had the opportunity to introduce the unit as well as build on the prior knowledge students had to meet SLO's. Lessons were done using a variety of mediums including technology, hands on experiments, videos, and class discussions.

Math - Numbers to 50 (KSA # 1,5,9)During my practicum, I did several lessons in the numbers unit. One of the biggest challenges I found during this unit was finding creative ways to relate this material to things the students understood. I spent a lot of time trying to create diagrams and things that students could physically see in order to help with number line and using a calendar concepts.

Language Arts - Guided Reading Groups (KSA #1,9,11)I was fortunate enough during my practicum to have the opportunity to work with 5 students in the classroom exclusively during guided reading time. The students in the group were working primarily working on identifying letter sounds and beginning word family groups. I spent a lot of time trying to come up with engaging and different ways to help these students. I used a variety of resources including workbooks, physically activities, and games. These students taught me the importance of literacy within all subjects in the classroom and provided me invaluable experience with understanding the different ways in which kids process and understand information. It challenged me to come up with alternate ways to present the same information, only in a way that they would understand better.
